Born at Wimbledon.OFFICER ACCIDENTALLY SHOT.Lieutenant M. E. E. Jukes, of the 14th Manchester Service Battalion, died on Saturday afternoon from a shot wound in the groin received when rabbiting in fields adjoining Elford-road, Lichfield. Lieutenant Jukes was one of a party of four officers, the others being Captain P. W. Mincher, the Rev. Augustine Egan Roman Catholic chaplain), and Second Lieutenant John Reginald Orrell. After shooting for some time they rested and examined their guns, taking them to pieces and recharging them. Lieutenant Jukes was unable to refix his gun properly, and handed it to Captain Mincher to put together again. While the captain was so engaged the gun exploded, and Lieutenant Jukes was struck in the left groin, and died within half an hour before medical assistance could be secured. His body was taken to the mortuary at the military hospital. Lieutenant Jukes, who was thirty-four years of age and married, was, it is stated, a London man.
