A beautiful setting for this memorial - 'Above Derwent' covers the area to the west and north-west of Derwent Water. The pasture is hidden from the road by a tall hedge and you have to look for a gate at one corner for the only sight of the memorial from the road. The road itself used to be the main road west out of Keswick, between Portinscale and Braithwaite, and was part of the A594, and was the setting for a garage where a murder was committed in the 1935 book, 'The Lake District Murder,' by John Bude. Having read the book, it was fascinating to actually see the approximate location.
