Robert, South African Contingent. - The "Times" casualty list for Saturday included the name of a native of Coniston in the person of Corpl. Robert Dowthwaite, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Dowthwaite, who emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta about nine years ago. On leaving school Robt. Dowthwaite took up work with the Furness Railway Co., and when 21 years old - that is 15 years ago - he left Coniston for South Africa, where he secured a good railway appointment, and he came to Coniston in 1913 and also visited his parents in Canada. He joined up early with the South African Contingent when war broke out and was for a time in Egypt. Then he was drafted to France and sustained severe wounds in the spring of 1916. After convalescence, he returned to France last October, communicated regularly with friends in Coniston till a month ago, when doubtless he was in the Vimy Ridge charge. He was 36 and a general favourite with all his associates. (Westmorland Gazette, 12 May 1917)____________________________________________________________ (Westmorland Gazette, 7 February 1920)
