SIGNS OF A GRIM STRUGGLE.[/b]
A startling discovery was made last evening in some experimental entrenchments at Aldershot, the body of a lieutenant being found in a terribly injured condition. His head was battered in, and appearances point to foul play. The police are making inquiries in the camp, and a soldier has been detained for his movements to be investigated. A later Aldershot message says: - The tragic fate of the officer - William Frederick Watterton, R.A.M.C. - has shocked and puzzled the whole garrison. When found he had apparently been dead some hours, and the body bore unmistakable signs of a grim struggle. There were severe injuries about the head, and these were probably the direct cause of death. (Lancashire Daily Post, 3 January 1917)
