ASHTON'S V.C. HERO. - The King has forwarded to Colour-Sergt. John Stephen Kenealey, 361, Bolton-road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, the Victoria Cross, which was awarded to his son, Lce.-Corpl. William Kenealey, 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, for bravery during the first Gallipoli landing. Since the announcement of the distinction, which was made on the popular vote of the remnants of that famous battalion, the existence of the recipient has been wrapped in mystery. His Majesty has sent with the cross the following kindly message of congratulation: - "January 12th, 1916. It is a matter of sincere regret to me that the death of Pte. William Kenealey deprived me of the pride of personally conferring upon him the Victoria Cross - the greatest of all military distinctions. - Signed, George, R.I." - Lce.-Corpl. Kenealey was previously a miner. (St Helens Reporter, 28 January 1916)
