The most recent history of St Leonard's (2003) remarks on the Gunner Foster tablet that it is "the only mention in church of a World War casualty....we have the chancel and sanctuary re-arrangement as our (memorial)".
Not a very clear-cut visual memorial and not, as far as I was able to see, one that is recorded by way of a memorial plaque.IN MEMORY OF JOSEPH WOODS FOR 16 YEARS SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE 3RD VOL. BATTN. SOUTH STAFF. REGT. WHO DIED AT BILSTON 23RD DECBR 1895 AGED 55 YEARS.
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY THE OFFICERS NON-COMMISIONED OFFICERS & MEN OF THE BATTALION.
