1890 Private Walter Wooff, 1st/4th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Died of wounds on 19th July 1916.
Sandside Soldier Dies of Wounds. General sympathy is expressed with Mr. and Mrs. Wooff, of St. John's Cross, Sandside, who received intelligence on Friday last that their youngest son, Walter Wooff, of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment (Furness Territorials), who was reported last week as having been wounded, had died in hospital in France. From a letter received from a nurse, it transpires that he and others were wounded when resting in a dugout by a shell which fell right in the entrance. As first he appeared to be progressing favourably, but later on his condition rapidly changed for the worse. (Lancaster Guardian, 29 July 1916) ____________________________________________________________
36349 Lance Corporal Henry Nelson, 20th Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action on 15th April 1917, aged 32. Son of Paul and L. Nelson, of Plantation Cottage, Sandside. CWGC database gives his age as 23. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial
KILLED IN ACTION NELSON, Corporal Henry, Lancashire Fusiliers. Word was received by Mr. Nelson, of Plantation Cottage, Sandside, on Tuesday, that his son, Corpl. Nelson, had been killed in action during the recent fighting. If he had lived until Wednesday he would have been 33 years of age. He was employed at the quarries at Sandside, and was popular among his fellow-workmen. His company officer, writing to Mr. Nelson, says: He was on my staff and I was so pleased with his work I had just promoted him corporal. He did his work conscientiously and quickly, and was cool and courageous in action. He met his death during a successful attack made by his battalion. He was hit by a shell after we had reached our objective. He suffered no pain, which is a consolation, and we buried him on the scene of our success.
