8703 Private Matthew Rook, 1st East Lancashire Regiment. Killed on 10th May 1915, aged 27. Son of James and Sarah Rook, of School Houses, Preston Patrick.
Information has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J. Rook, of the Schoolhouses, Preston Patrick, that their son Matthew was killed in France on May 10th. He was a time-expired member of the East Lancashires, and had almost completed his reserve period when war broke out in August. Along with his regiment he was immediately drafted with the Expeditionary Force, and was quickly in an engagement, as he was slightly wounded at Mons. He continued with his regiment until the beginning of this year when he was transferred to the telegraphic section, in the work of which he had previous army experience. The comrade who reports the sad occurrence to Mr. and Mrs. Rook says: "Matthew was looking through a telescope when he was shot through the head; death being almost instantaneous." He was twenty-seven years of age and unmarried.
