Lancaster Soldier's Funeral
The funeral took place at St. Luke's Churchyard, Skerton, on Tuesday afternoon, of the late Private John Wallace, of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, who died at Cork Hospital on Friday afternoon from wounds received while serving with the British Expeditionary Force. Deceased, who was 22 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Wallace, of 60, Darby-road, Lancaster. The firing party, from the 5th (Reserve) Battalion the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, preceded the coffin containing the body from the house to St. Luke's Church. Sergeant Yeoman was in command, and the band, in charge of Sergeant Nesbit, played the "Dead March" in Saul. A large number of people from the district witnessed the procession, and there was a large congregation at the service in the Church, which was conducted by the Rev. J. E. Jelly, vicar, assisted by the curate, the Rev. W. A. Surtees, the scriptures being read by the Mayor of Lancaster, Mr. W. Briggs, J.P. At the graveside the choir sang the hymn, "Nearer, my God, to Thee," and three volleys were fired, after which the "Last Post" was sounded. A younger brother of the deceased, Private George Wallace, is serving with the 5th Reserve Battalion the King's Own. (Lancaster Guardian, 14 November 1914)
