WHY LONGRIDGE MAN WAS AN ABSENTEE.At the Preston County Police Court, this morning, before Messrs. C. Eastwood and J. Leigh, John Byers, L.N.L. Regiment, stationed in Wales, was charged with being an absentee. - P.C. Oldcorn said that, acting on instructions from accused's commanding officer, he arrested accused at his home in Dunderdale-street, Longridge. Accused told witness that his wife had been taken ill while he was on leave, and being unable to get anyone in the house he stopped at home. - Accused said that while his wife was ill one of his children was also taken ill. - The Chairman said they were bound to hand accused over to an escort. No doubt if accused explained the matter to his commanding officer he would be properly treated. - Accused was handed over to an escort.
