8109 Private Thomas Arthur Airey, 1st/14th London Regiment (London Scottish). Missing, presumed killed, on 1st July 1916, aged 21. Son of Thomas and Fanny Airey, of Moorthwaite, Barbon.
Missing Kirkby Lonsdale Soldier. Mr. Thomas Airey, of Moorthwaite, has received an intimation from the War Office that his son, Thomas Arthur, has been "missing" since the engagement on July 1st. He received his education at the Kirkby Lonsdale Grammar School and at the outbreak of war was in residence at Christ College, Cambridge, where he was preparing to take a Theological Tripos. He left in the spring of 1915 to do voluntary work for the Y.M.C.A. in France, which he did for nine months. In January, 1916, he joined the Artists Rifles O.T.C., and on a draft for France being required for it, he at once volunteered, and was with the 1st Battalion Artists' Rifles there until June, when he transferred to the 1st London Scottish without waiting for a commission. He is 21 years of age, and an only son.
