The Germans are rather good at miscalculating. Their bombs fail to explode and their guns are frequently as erratic as their statesmanship. Our picture, which was taken at Ramscapelle, in Flanders, shows one of the mortars abandoned by the enemy. These instruments drop shells into the Allies' trenches at short range, and were expected to do heavy damage. But the only result of their fall on the soft ground was to splash the men with mud.
