Private Alfred Devy's memorial is one of the older headstones and memorials that have been moved to the churchyard perimeter. Sadly, it's almost completely covered by ivy now but you can still make out the cross above his name.
The inscription reads In Loving Memory of Pte. Alfred Devey 7th Batn. Rifle Brigade beloved son of Edward & Gertrude Devey who passed away in France Aug. 13th 1916 aged 27 years.
Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friendsAlfred was born in Shirleywich, near Weston, in 1889. Note that the correct spelling of his surname would seem to be Devy.
