Some may wonder why the War Memorial lies just outside the churchyard and why, unlike the plaque in the church, it makes no mention of rank or medals. It was erected in 1920 at a time when the miners of Ingleton Colliery, like others of the Yorkshire Miners Association, were on strike and egalitarian influences were very much to the fore in local political circles. After some debate, a compromise was reached whereby the Church allowed part of the churchyard to be set aside for a non-sectarian monument to be erected.
