Hawkshead Drawn Blank.

An open-air recruiting meeting was held at Hawkshead on Wednesday night, Canon Irving, vicar, presiding. While pointing out that the parish had sent a good number of men, to whom all honour was due for their response to duty, he thought another 20 or 30 should join the colours, and not be stigmatised as shirkers. Failing response, he foresaw conscription at an early date, when they would be compelled to do their duty. Mr. J. Bretherton, of the London Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, then gave a forceful address and made a strong appeal to the young men. He pointed out the large percentage amongst those fighting who were married men, while there were between four and five million young men with no dependants between the ages of 18 and 38, full of young vigour and manhood, who had never yet considered it their duty to help those who were fighting their battles. Sergt.-Major Felpts, Mr. W. Burra Simpson, Major Heelis and Mr. W. Postlethwaite also spoke. No names were given in, but Major Heelis said he hoped some would come forward after the meeting. The Parish Council have formed themselves into the local recruiting committee, and appointed Mr. J. Woodend as agent.

DIED OF WOUNDS
KENDAL, Pte. F., of the T.M. Battery, has died of wounds. His mother has received from the captain of the company a letter, in which he speaks of the deceased as "so steady, so willing, and so brave."
