Sir Edward Stanley had declared that if he returned victorious from the battlefield of Flodden Field on 9th September, 1513, he would build the tower at Hornby Church; The English army defeated the invading Scots and so Sir Edward's memorial to the victory was built. The tower bears his escutcheon and the following inscription (but in Latin):- Edward Stanley, soldier, Lord Monteagle, caused this to be built.
