As I was heading back to Hanley bus station, at 5 pm, I saw two men staggering along Old Hall Street. One couldn't walk in a straight line and was carrying an almost-empty blue bottle of white cider. The City Council can try to regenerate Hanley, oops it's branded the City Centre now, as hard as they like - they want Stoke-on-Trent to be UK City of Culture in 2021 - but a new shopping centre and a new bus station won't hide the social problems. I picked up a copy of the council's newspaper at Hanley Town Hall, and the headline news was that 200 care jobs were to be created in council-run old peoples' homes. 200 is better than none, but how long is it since most of the pottery jobs and all the mining jobs disappeared?
