22027 Private William Drinkall, 6th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action on 8th March 1917, aged 24. Son of Mr. J. Drinkall, of Allithwaite.
KILLED IN ACTION. DRINKALL, Pte. - Official news has been received by Mr. J. Drinkall, of Allithwaite, that his son William has been killed in action while serving with the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regt. in Mesopotamia. Deceased was 24 years of age and a shoemaker with Mr. Vickers, of Grange. He enlisted in February of last year, and three months later went with his regiment to Mesopotamia. A memorial service was held in Allithwaite Church on Sunday afternoon, when there was a large congregation. The service was choral, including Psalms 29 and 130 and the hymns, "On the resurrection morning," "Christ will gather in His own," and "Jesus lives." Mr. W. J. Lamb played "I know that my Redeemer liveth" at the commencement of the service, and also read the lesson taken from the burial service. The Rev. J. W. Glibertson (vicar) impressively read the prayers and delivered a sympathetic address. The organist played the Dead March in Saul at the close.
