2615 Private Isaac Bateson Pye, Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry. Killed on 27th February 1916, aged 20. Son of William Marsland Pye and Sarah Elizabeth Alice Pye, of Cliffdale, Thurnham.TROOPER BATESON PYETrooper Isaac Bateson Pye, of the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry, third son of Mr. William Marsland Pye, of Cliffdale, Thurnham, near Lancaster, is reported killed. He was educated at the Friends' School, Lancaster, and afterwards served part of his time as an engineer at Messrs. Vickers and Maxim's, Barrow. He joined the Yeomanry at the outbreak of the war, and though only 20, his fine physique and skill in athletics won him favour in his squadron during training. He had been in France for nine months, and was expecting his retransfer as a skilled engineer. News of his death in action was conveyed in a letter received by his father on Friday from Major Hayhurst, who spoke of his death as a great loss to the regiment. Sergt. Bland, Kirkby Lonsdale, wrote to the same effect. (Westmorland Gazette, 11 March 1916)_____________________________________________________________ Pte.
