Sentry Shot.

Lancaster Man Wounded.

An exciting incident has occurred at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh. One of the sentries, Driver Hodgson, of the 2nd Lancashire Brigade Royal Field Artillery, between ten and eleven o'clock at night, observed a man within the grounds. He challenged him, and while in conversation endeavoured to get the stranger nearer the sentries' quarters. Realising this, the man suddenly produced a revolver and shot the sentry in the neck. The guard turned out and Hodgson, before collapsing, stated what had occurred. The stranger, however, had escaped and a search for him was unsuccessful.

Hodgson resides at 6, Clarendon-road, Skerton, Lancaster. His wife, having seen the report, telegraphed to Capt. H. D. Wilson, who promptly replied with the reassuring information that the wound was not serious. Hodgson is one of the oldest drivers in the local battery, and re-engaged only just before the last camp, which was broken up on mobilisation, has served previously in the King's Own Royal Lancaster Infantry Battalion.

2182 Private John Wilson, 1st/5th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed on 4th May 1915, aged 20. Son of Richard and Jane Wilson, of 21, Lune Street, Skerton. CWGC database gives his date of death as 3rd May 1915.

Another promising young life has been cut short by the death in action of Pte. John Wilson, aged 20, who lived at 21, Lune-street. Capt. Bainbridge, in his letter of sympathy, states that Pte. Wilson was killed by a shell at Fresenberg on May 4th. The Captain and twelve other men were with him when the shell burst, and Wilson was hit and never regained consciousness. Four other men were killed by the same shell and five wounded. "The men have lost a true friend and the country a good soldier."

10502 Private Martin Joseph Herman, 2nd East Lancashire Regiment. 11.5.1915, aged 27. Son of Mrs. Herman, of 46, Main Street, Skerton.

Mrs. Herman, of 46, Main-street, Skerton, has received news that her son, 10,502 Pte. Joseph Herman, A Coy., 1st East Lancashires, was killed in action at the beginning of May. He was 25 years of age, and prior to the war was employed at Lune Mills. He had had training with the reserve of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, and transferred to the East Lancashires when the war broke out. His elder brother, George, is now in the 2nd East Lancashires at the Front. His father is serving with the National Reserve at Birkenhead.

Lance-Corpl. CHAS. EDWARD STILLING (19), Loyal North Lancs., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Stilling, 69, Lune-street, is reported missing since Oct. 3rd. He was a well known member of the Skerton Wesleyan Choir, an apprentice with Messrs. Waring and Gillow when he joined up in February, 1917, and an old boy of Skerton Council School.

72972 Acting Bombardier John Wallbank, 70th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. 2nd November 1914, aged 22. Son of Richard and Mary Jane Wallbank, of 32, Earl Street, Skerton.

Lancaster Bombardier Killed.

Mrs. Wallbank, of 32, Earl-street, Skerton, Lancaster, has received intimation that her second son, John, a bombardier in the 70th Battery, R.F.A., formerly engaged at Lune Mills, was killed in action on the 2nd inst. Mrs. Wallbank, who has brought up ten children, has another son, James, in the 34th Battery, R.F.A., and her eldest son, Richard, has been nine years with the 6th Battalion the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, with which he is at present serving. The communication announcing John's death was in the following terms:-
"Dear Mrs. Wallbank, - I regret I have to write and tell you that your son was killed on November 2nd, gallantly doing his duty. We were in action, and he was one of my telephonists on my battery staff. Our wire got cut, and your son was assisting to repair the same when a shell fell among us, killing two and wounding a third. The officers, N.C.O.'s, and men of the battery sympathise with you in your loss, and you have the consolation of knowing that your son fell doing his duty for his country. We buried him near the spot where he gallantly fell. I had a great respect for your son, and in his capacity as a signaller and telephonist on my staff I came in close contact with him. On several occasions he had gone out and mended telephone wires under fire. He knew no fear. Again expressing our sympathies to you and your family. - I am yours faithfully, H. C. S. Clarke, Major, Commanding 70th Battery R. F. A."

241510 Private Louis Penrith, 1st/5th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Died, from wounds received in action, on 28th July 1917, aged 36. Brother of Jane E. Whitehead, of 29, Pump Street, Preston.

Mrs. Simpson, 16, Captain's-row, Skerton, has received intelligence that Pte. Louis Penrith (37), who lodged at her house for 16 years, died from wounds received in action on July 23rd while serving with a local battalion of the King's Own Regiment. Pte. Penrith's mother, who lives at 29, Plumb-street, Preston, received a telegram on July 28th, to say that he died from shell wounds and gas poisoning. He enlisted in November, 1914, going to France with the First Fifth in February, 1915. On July 28th, 1916, he was wounded in the shoulder and was treated in Warrington Hospital, having a furlough in Skerton afterwards. Latterly he has been in Belgium guarding bridges. Mrs. Simpson sent him a pound of tobacco a month ago, and in acknowledging the gift, he says his pals had a grand time after their experience of dodging shells. Mrs. Simpson's own son, Drive Alfred Simpson, A.S.C., has been in France since October, 1914.

51422 Private George Bell, 1st/9th Manchester Regiment. Killed in action on 14th September 1917, aged 21. Son of Jacob and Mary Bell, of 10, Myndon Street, Skerton.

Deep sympathy will be expressed with Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bell, 10, Myndon-street, Skerton, in the receipt of the sad news that their only son, Pte. George Bell (22), Manchester Regiment, was killed in action on Sept. 14th. As a boy he attended the Morecambe Central School, and started as a telegraphist at the Lancaster Castle Station Office, going subsequently to Burton and Holme and Penrith as a telegraphist and booking clerk. He joined the Border Regiment seven months since, and had only been at the front three months since, and had only been at the front three months, having been transferred to the Manchester Regiment. His parents learned of his death on returning from their holidays. Mrs. Bell's brother, Pte. W. Hodgson, of Ingleton, was killed in the battle of the Somme.

42318 Private John Liver, 2nd/5th Lancashire Fusiliers. Died of wounds on 24th September 1917, aged 27. Son of Michael and Sarah Jane Liver, of 12, Captains Row, Skerton.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Liver, 12, Captain's-row, Skerton, have learnt of the death from wounds of their son, Pte. John Liver, Lancashire Fusiliers. Last week they received a postcard saying he had been admitted to hospital and was going on well, but on Monday a telegram arrived to say he had died of wounds. Deceased is a former pupil of Mr. J. N. Armstrong, who has attained his jubilee as a master. He played football for Skerton Reserve, and worked at St. George's. He joined up at Easter and after eight weeks' training went to France. His letters have been cheerful. A brother, Pte. Wm. Liver is in France with the K.O. "Second Fifth." He has gained several medals from footballing, one while at Ashford.

Pte. Richard Derham, Royal Lancaster Regiment, whose wife and one child reside at 23, Main-street, Skerton, is reported to have been admitted to hospital suffering from nephritis. He joined up on April 4th last, and was drafted to the front on July 9th. A former scholar of Skerton Council School, he was employed at St. George's Works.

18254 Private Abraham Smith, 9th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action on 19th September 1918, aged 38. Husband of Mrs. Smith, of 9, Norfolk Street, Skerton.

Pte. ABRAHAM SMITH (38), K.O., whose wife and two children live at 9, Norfolk-street, is reported killed in action at Salonica on the 19th Sept. An old boy of Skerton Council School, he was employed at Lune Mills up to enlisting in March, 1915, and serving twelve months in France was drafted to Salonica. Mrs. Smith's brother, Pte. Henry Park, K.O., was killed in January, 1915.

155746 Private Frederick William Keogh, 38th Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly (2497) 5th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action on 30th October 1918, aged 22. Son of Edward Jos. and Isabella Keogh, of 5, Back Heysham Road, Skerton.

Pte. FRED KEOGH, Warwickshires, of 5, Back Heysham-road, is reported to have been killed in action in France, news reaching his mother on Thursday. He originally served in the K.O., and had been twice wounded and once wrecked through torpedo, just returning to France a fortnight ago.
